Improve Your Vision and Have a New Look on Life!
We may be able to eliminate or reduce your need for contacts and eye glasses, you are using for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism. In less than 15 minutes, we can alter the shape of the cornea to improve your uncorrected vision. Laser vision correction procedures are highly effective, with most of our patients no longer needing contacts or eye glasses for distance vision. Dr. Sher and our highly skilled team will examine you at our downtown Minneapolis office and perform the surgery at the renowned Phillips Eye Institute. The Phillips Eye Institute is an outstanding hospital, dedicated to ophthalmic treatment and surgery. PEI has an exceptional record of patient care, advanced technology and a patient friendly environment. After surgery, Dr. Sher and his staff will attend and administer your postoperative care. He strongly believes that the surgeon provides the best postoperative care and should be present for this important stage of vision improvement. This is in contrast to many heavily advertised LASIK clinics that contract paramedical personnel for postoperative care of their patients,
Dr. Sher would like to help as many people as possible enjoy good eyesight. PRK laser vision correction allows him to offer that opportunity to you.
PRK Surgery
PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is a form of laser eye surgery used to alter the shape of the anterior central cornea by ablating (removing) a small amount of cells from the outer layer (epithelium) of the cornea. Once this surface layer of cells has been gently removed, access to the corneal stoma can be achieved. Using the eximer laser, the cornea is gently and precisely reshaped. PRK, LASEK and EPI-LASIK are all refractive surgeries using the excimer laser. The only difference between these procedures is the method used to remove the epithelium. This outer layer of the cornea, the epithelium, heals itself in less than a week. PRK surgery is extremely effective and can greatly improve your vision without cutting a corneal flap as is done with the LASIK procedure.
PRK Benefits
Dr. Sher has performed many thousands of laser vision correction procedures (including LASIK) and prefers PRK (Advanced Surface Ablation) surgery. He believes it is the safest and best methods of laser vision correction available today and uses PRK almost exclusively, because PRK has the following advantages over LASIK.
- less chance for complications
- slightly better visual outcomes
- lack of dry eye symptoms
- absence of corneal cutting and weakening the cornea
LASIK Surgery
Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a refractive surgical procedure similar to PRK, that is also used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Although there is quicker healing with LASIK and less post operative discomfort, the LASIK procedure requires cutting a corneal flap with a surgical instrument (microkeratome) or a laser device (femtosecond). Regardless of which method is used to cut, the creation of the corneal flap is permanent, and can result in complications during eye disease treatment or in the event of trauma. However, visual acuity results with LASIK are nearly identical to PRK.
